How Much Do LED Strip Lights Cost To Run?

LED strip lights are incredibly cheap to run and use very little electricity. This is because LED converts 95% of its energy into light, making it the most cost-effective light source available. To put it into perspective, the cost to run a typical 10W LED strip light is around £10 a year. Compare this to an equivalent incandescent light source and you can expect to spend £60 a year in energy costs!

LED strips cut overall lighting expenses by a substantial amount due to the low amount of energy they consume and their extended lifespan.

LED Strip Lights Vs. Incandescent Lighting

As mentioned previously, the savings you can make from installing LED strip lights are significant. To use the same amount of light, LED’s use 75% less energy than conventional incandescent lighting, and around 18% less electricity than compact fluorescent lamps

To really understand the efficiency and savings from LED and traditional lighting, let’s do a simple calculation. Assume we have a 100-watt incandescent bulb and one kWh of energy costs 15 pence.

  • Incandescent bulb: A 100-watt incandescent bulb running for a full year would use 876 kWh of energy, which would cost £131.40 in electricity costs. Remember that you’d also need to replace the bulb about once a month.
  • LED Strip: It would only take a 16-watt bulb to emit as much light as a 100-watt incandescent bulb, and it would use only 140 kWh of energy over the year. The electric cost would be just £21. Keep in mind that one LED would last you the entire year.

LED Strip Lights Are Also Environmentally Friendly

Now more than ever environmental concerns are incredibly important to many people. We are mindful of our own consumer waste, our electrical usage, and the harmful addition of chemicals and other toxic substances to our landfills and rivers.

Less Power Needed To Run

The low electrical needs of LED lighting help keep power costs down and reduce a building’s overall power usage. That lower power consumption also decreases energy demand, which in turn reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Not only that, but their long life means they are rarely replaced, keeping more items out of landfills.

No Toxic Chemicals

Another environmental benefit is the non-toxic nature of LED lights. In comparison, the fluorescent lighting found in many workplaces contains toxic chemicals such as mercury. As well as a pollutant, this is potentially hazardous. When LED lights do fail, clean up is safe.

New Regulations For Lighting Products

With the continuous update of technology, lighting products are becoming more and more energy-efficient. As of 1st September 2021, the European Commission enforced the new ErP Regulation (EU) 2019/2020 and Energy Efficiency Labelling Regulation (EU) 2019/2015 for lighting products. This means that from this time onwards, all lighting products must comply with these new eco-design requirements and must fulfil stricter minimum requirements with regards to energy efficiency.

The regulation on the energy labeling of light sources defines new (rescaled) energy efficiency classes (A to G). With our new product updates, Ledapt will be sitting ahead of the market in class D (high efficiency).
